Timezone Cheatsheet
We have members in lots of different timezones (British, Central, Pacific,
Eastern...) so for meetings it'd be good if we could rely on computers to get
the times right for us.
Using Discord's Epoch Time
You can use <t:epoch-time-here> in Discord to display a
timestamp. This will be shown in users' local timezone, and seems to take
Daylight Savings into account too!
- Agree on date in one timezone (i.e. British)
- Use an appropriate tool to
convert to Unix Epoch (should be a number that looks something like
1646681400)
- Put in a t block e.g.
<t:1646681400>
- Laugh all the way to the bank.
Ballpark calculations
- British to Eastern is about a 5-hour difference - 12pm British is about 7am Eastern.
- British to Central is about a 6-hour difference - 12pm British is about 6am Central.
- British to Mountain is about a 7-hour difference - 12pm British is about 5am Mountain.
- British to Pacific is about an 8-hour difference - 12pm British is about 4am Pacific.
Caveats
- British and American daylight savings times happen at different times, so
beware that around March and October/November times may desync. Discord's time
feature takes care of this, but be wary when you convert times.
